How To Disable Browser Notifications Using Intune
This article explains how to disable Chrome and Edge toast notifications using Intune.
Push notifications via the browser has been very common these days. With WordPress powering more than half of all the websites in the world makes it easier for website admins to setup push notifications with a free plugin.
While the notifications has it’s space in the personal realm, it is a bit invasive and sometimes a security threat to be allowing notifications from any websites on a corporate machines. Luckily, these can be blocked easily using Intune. We will have a look at how to disable them in both Chrome and Edge, most commonly installed browsers in a corporate machine.
How to disable toast notifications in Chrome
A configuration profile needs to be created to disable browser notifications using Intune. You can either create a single profile covering both the browsers or have one profile each. Check out how to deploy Chrome using Intune if you haven’t done so. Follow the steps below to block the notifications.
Launch the Intune portal and navigate to Devices -> Windows -> Configuration Profiles.

Click on the ‘Create profile’ button.
On the create profile page, select ‘Windows 10 and later’ as the platform and ‘Settings catalog’ as the profile type.

Enter a descriptive name, description and click next.

Click on ‘Add Settings’ within the configuration settings page.

On the settings picker, search for ‘notifications’.

Select Administrative Templates\Google\Google Chrome\Content Settings.

This brings up 12 settings on the sub category.

You need to make your decision now – whether you want to completely disable notifications (on all websites) or allow a few in between. We will disable notifications across the board, select ‘Default Notifications Setting -> Default Notifications Setting (Device)‘.
This brings up the actual setting within the middle pane. Flick the switch to ‘Enabled‘ and select Do not allow any site to show desktop notifications. Click next.

Click next in the Scope tags page.

Select All Devices in the assignments page. You can also tailor the profile to a group of devices.

Double check the settings and click Create to setup the configuration profile.

If all goes well, the new profile gets listed in the portal in a few seconds.

How to disable toast notifications in Edge

Select Microsoft Edge\Content Settings.
This brings up 16 settings on the sub category.

You need to make your decision now – whether you want to completely disable notifications (on all websites) or allow a few in between. We will disable notifications across the board, select ‘Default Notifications Setting -> Default Notifications Setting (Device)‘.
This brings up the actual setting within the middle pane. Flick the switch to ‘Enabled‘ and select Do not allow any site to show desktop notifications. Click next.

If all goes well, the configuration profile to block Edge notifications will be listed in the portal.

End User Experience
Once the policy is picked up by the Intune managed machine, you can see that the browser notifications have been turned off completely and that the user cannot make any changes.

Notice the “Your browser is managed by your organization” banner in Chrome.
