A step that is a bit confusing for someone who is new to the Lync world.

Let me explain. The updates for Lync 2010 server are known as “Cumulative Updates” (CU). The ones for Exchange server are called "Update Rollups”. The latest update for Lync Server at the time of writing is CU5, download it here.

There are a couple of ways to patch your Lync server.

  • Use Windows update. Usually the updates are only available via windows update at a later date than the release date.
  • Download and install the files manually.
  • Use Lync Server Update Installer (the easiest option).

Whenever a CU is released, there will be an exe file named LyncServerUpateInstaller in the download page, along with other files (which are for patching manually).

Download the LyncServerUpateInstaller.exe alone and run it (as admin) on the Lync Server.

The installer will list all the updates that are required and depending on the Lync roles installed, the installer will run the updates necessary for each role.

    You should mention not to frorget that if you update an Enterprise Pool you need to upgrade the BackEnd Databases. Otherwise Users will have troubles logging in to Lync:

    Install-CsDatabase -Update -ConfiguredDatabases -SqlServerFqdn -UseDefaultSqlPaths
