This is a step that will be taken by most Lync admins. Let me explain the steps for the same as I have seen few questions in various forums.

Installing admin tools for a server product is a no-brainer, but it is a bit confusing for some Lync admins (who doesn’t read the small print), as there is no option for management or admin tools. It is straightforward in Exchange though as you have a check box for management tools.

The supported workstation OS for Lync admin tools are 64bit Vista SP2 & Windows 7. As you would expect, you can install the tools on Windows 2008 SP2 and R2 as they are the supported OS for installing the entire product. You should install the Lync pre-reqs like Silverlight, .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and PowerShell 2.0 to use the admin tools.

In order to install Lync admin tools, run setup.exe from \Setup\Amd64\ from the Lync DVD. You will be prompted for the Lync installation files.

Click Install and agree to the terms and conditions. This will bring the Lync Deployment Wizard (something that you used to install Lync server in the first place). Click on “Install Topology Builder”.

Wait for the installer to finish. You have now installed all Lync admin tools Winking smile. Installing topology builder also installs Lync Shell, Control Panel and Logging Tool – the admin toolset.

  1. What if there are firewalls between your lync server and this workstation. Which ports have to be open towards the lync server?
