A question that comes up these days in the forums (with the release of SQL server 2012) is whether Lync 2010 can use SQL Server 2012 as the backend database host.

At the time of writing, SQL Server 2012 CANNOT be used with Lync Server 2010. This is down to the difference in the architecture between SQL Server 2012 and previous versions.

As it stands today, SQL Server 2005 SP3+ onwards (upto SQL 2008 R2) can be used as a backend server for Lync.

This is an important piece of info who wants to get to the latest SQL and are planning for Lync at the same time.
